Chapter 10

The next morning dawned crisp and cool, a thin layer of fog hovered just above the surface of the ocean. I was standing in the prow of the ship with the Ender King. Skeleton Cove was in plain view straight ahead.

“I see where the name comes from,” said the Ender King.

“Yeah, I just thought it was some stupid name the pirates used to sound cool,” I said.

We stared at a cliff face that looked remarkably like a skeleton’s head. There were dark hollows near the top of the cliff which looked like eyes underneath a nearly linear cliff top which looked eerily similar to the top of a skull. Where the mouth should have been was a large opening into which flowed the ocean. The opening was wide enough for a ship to pass through it, but just barely. From our current position, the opening itself was dark, and we could not see what was beyond it.

At about nine o’clock in the morning we entered the mouth of the skeleton. We passed through a dark shadowy portion of a cave for about one minute. And then we sailed out the rear of the cave into a large lagoon deep beneath the top of the cliff. There was only a small opening above us which let in just enough light to see where everything was, as though all day long the sun was just about to rise. There were several other ships moored in the lagoon. All of them appeared to be pirate ships.

Makai approached us from behind. “What do you think?”

The Ender King nodded his head. “Impressive. I had no idea such a large lagoon would exist behind the skeleton’s mouth.”

Makai smiled. “No one does. The tiny opening above let’s in light, and if any players are stupid enough to mine straight down, they will fall into the water where we can … take care of them. That’s why it’s the perfect spot to unload our pirate booty.”

A few minutes later, our ship was tied to a small pier and a large group of villagers, helmeted skeletons, and strays boarded the ship to start unloading it.

“I guess it isn’t just called Skeleton Cove because of that cliff,” said the Ender King.

Makai leaned in close to us. “Yes, when we first discovered this place, it was overrun with skeletons and, despite its distance from a snowy or frozen ocean biome, strays. At first, we tried to fight them, but once we realized their numbers, we made a deal. They unload our ships for free and they get ten percent of the value of the cargo.”

“Seems generous,” said the Ender King.

Makai shrugged. “Peace costs money, but in the end, it is priceless.”

The Ender King looked sad. “Wise words, sir. Wise words.”

I pointed at the other ships moored in the lagoon. “Who are all these other pirates?” I asked. “I thought you were the only one.”

Makai grinned. “I am the only one. All of these ships’ captains answer to me.”

Now, the Ender King was truly impressed.
